Four Strategies To Achieve Your Goals in 2022

The time has come to put yourself first.

January 4, 2022

So…where did the time go, right?! There’s no doubt that the last couple years have been tough for basically everyone. And as we head into a new year, you might be feeling like you want to make a change but don’t know where to start. Or you could just want practical tips for implementing a goal. At Upkeep, we’re passionate about helping women become their happiest, most flourishing selves, so we’ve got some strategies for how to take care of yourself and achieve your goals in the new year.

  1. Protect your time.

Here’s the thing: we know that women from all walks of life often feel pulled in multiple competing directions. We also know that you can’t achieve your goals if you’re bone-tired and emotionally depleted. The best way to counteract this is simply to schedule in time for yourself. We know it’s easier said than done, and every woman out there has a list of things she ‘should’ be doing instead of taking care of herself. But imagine how much better you would feel if, instead of doom-scrolling through news stories for ten minutes at bedtime, you set aside the same amount of time for something that really makes you feel better. It could be a quick yoga flow, listening to an audiobook, writing in a journal, or engaging in mindfulness meditation or contemplative prayer. Imagine if you did that every night. Be intentional with the free time that you do have, and set boundaries around it–doing the dishes can wait. You don’t have to upend your entire schedule in order to make time for yourself. You just have to start making it a habit. Of course, we’re partial to advanced facials and laser hair removal as a part of our self-care routines–but scheduling in time for yourself should really be something you do every day. Set reminders and calendar events in your phone–think of it like a meeting with yourself. (It would be kind of embarrassing if you didn’t show up, right?)

  1. Take stock of what you really want before setting goals.

It’s so easy to be swept up into someone else’s idea of what you should be or do. This is true both on the personal and societal level. It could be that you feel left out when all your other friends are buying houses…or your parents think now is the time for you to start a family…or you keep getting comments from people that you’re “a little old” to be reinventing yourself (Um, we don’t remember asking for your opinion, Janet). Women are usually conditioned to please other people and to look for consensus, but if you let this tendency get out of hand, it can cloud your own understanding of what you want in life. Plus, there’s the related problem of comparison. When you compare yourself to others, you can suddenly feel ‘behind schedule,’ even though we’re all on our own unique time frames. So, take the time to be honest with yourself. What do you want out of this year? What big change have you been putting off? How can you apply and develop your talents? What needs in your life have gone unfulfilled? Think about it carefully, and write down your thoughts. It could be that your goals for your life have really shifted over the past couple of years, in ways you didn’t even realize. Of course we have to take into account the people we care about when we’re designing our lives. But if you always put other people’s desires for you ahead of honoring your true desires, you’ll feel unfulfilled and lost. Instead, take courage and set goals that excite you!

  1. Break down your goals into smaller, more achievable steps.

Your middle school teacher wasn’t wrong when she said the best way to complete a project was to do it one step at a time. If you want to make your dreams a reality, that almost always involves daily habits. Say your goal is to find a better job than the one you have now. The simple truth is that it won’t happen all at once, unless you’re incredibly lucky. Plus, it’s hard to keep motivation high at all times. There are going to be days where you don’t want to do the work. So set small goals for yourself along the way–applying to 5 jobs every day, attending 2 networking events per month, doing one informational interview per week, et cetera. Different goals require different breakdowns. Some goals are going to be more time-based, like a certain number of minutes spent doing something, while others require numerical metrics, such as increasing your weights in the gym by 5 lbs a week every week, or writing 350 words per day. Making checklists and checking off those small goals every day makes you feel more in control–and it actually does move you closer to your goal.

  1. Just start doing the thing.

Now, maybe you know what you want to accomplish this year and even how to do it, but you’re paralyzed with fear. Most common is the fear of failure. How do you move beyond that fear and start taking action? First, don’t beat yourself up for being afraid. Starting a business, quitting smoking, starting to date again, pursuing a degree–all of these things are occasionally scary for everyone doing them. Attempting any goal introduces the possibility of failure. Second, accept that even positive changes can be uncomfortable. We have to tolerate that feeling of stepping into uncharted territory. Third, remember that while change can be painful, it’s even more painful to be stuck in a situation that doesn’t serve you. Change is natural, and if you stay too long in one place, you’ll wind up outgrowing it anyway–just ask the butterflies. If they stayed in their cocoons, they’d miss out on the best part of their lives: being beautiful, fluttery butterflies! Once you commit to your goal, and take the first step–even if your knees are wobbling–it all gets easier.

We hope these strategies help you achieve your goals in 2022! Nothing makes us happier than seeing women succeed in their unique pursuits.

Love from the Upkeep team! ❤
