What is Russian Lip Filler?

This technique is perfect for you if you’ve never had lip filler before.

September 25, 2023

"Russian lips" are suddenly trending. But what does that term even mean? If you’re curious, you’re not alone. It refers to a specific technique of lip filler placement that looks natural-but still makes a statement. Here’s all the details about this style of lip filler, so you can learn if it’s right for you.

Why is it called “Russian” lip filler?

According to some sources, this technique is popular in Russia. But other people say it’s called “Russian” lip filler because the shape of the lips mimics what you’d see on a Russian doll: a defined cupid’s bow with a lot of height to it, and a full lower lip too. We can’t definitively say which explanation is true, but this technique is also sometimes called “doll lips,” so maybe the Russian doll story is closer to the truth. Between this and Barbie Botox, dolls are really having a moment right now.

What makes Russian lips different?

The Russian technique is mostly about creating height in the lips rather than projecting volume. The cupid’s bow is injected in a vertical orientation to raise it higher on the face, and the lower lip is also given a V-shape look (fuller in the center, tapering off at the corners) to emphasize the overall height of your lips. This is in contrast to traditional filler methods that create more of an outward projection and impression of rounded fullness.

How long do Russian lips last?

The Russian technique uses the same types of filler as other lip augmentations: hyaluronic acid products like Juvederm and Restylane. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your skin naturally produces that declines over time with aging. Your Russian technique lips will last about 12 months on average, with a touch up often recommended after 6 months.

Do Russian style lip injections hurt?

Yes, getting lip injections is uncomfortable. But your provider will apply a numbing cream to minimize pain. With the Russian technique, many people find they experience more bruising and swelling. The best way to handle this is to avoid alcohol and NSAID painkillers (like Advil or Aleve) before your appointment, because it can thin your blood. The swelling should go down after 3-5 days and bruises should be healed after a week or so. It’s all worth it when you see your settled results.

Who is a good candidate for Russian style lip filler?

If you’re looking for a subtle enhancement, the Russian technique is a great choice. It’s a timeless shape based on classical proportions. Equally, it’s good if you’re wanting to add height to your upper lip. If your upper lip is thin, this technique can correct that. It can also help even out the proportions of your whole face if the space between the tip of your nose and your cupid’s bow is too long. If you have petite features and you’re worried that lip filler could look too strong on you, the Russian technique may work better.
